This archipelago is made up of 10 main islands and around 8 islets. Main islands include Santa Luzia, Boa Vista, Sal, Maio and Santiago.

Legislative power is exercised by the Government and by the National Assembly (Asembleia Nacional). The National Assembly comprises 72 members, each of which is elected for a five year term, and they nominate the Prime Minister, who is then appointed by the President.
